While this isn’t a traditional Stand Up Paddle Movie, it does have some SUP in it. I have been wanting to see this movie since it came out in 2009. The problem is, it was released in limited areas. We never got it in Austin, and I never seemed to get to the cities where it was playing, while it was still there.
Normally Blu-Ray movies are at least $24.95 when they launch. Not the case with this movie. For the price of $14.98, you almost can’t miss. It costs that much to see it in the IMAX movie theaters it was produced for, and now it can owned for that price.
I ordered my copy a few days ago, and am waiting patiently for it to arrive. I will try and update this post after viewing it to provide some thoughts on the movie.

Review from The Florida Times-Union:
“It’s hard to imagine a better way to open the theater than “The Ultimate Wave: Tahiti 3D.” The film isn’t perfect – it lags a little, even though it’s just 45 minutes long – but when it takes to the surf, it is just beautiful, even awe-inspiring.
I’ve found the much-hyped 3-D technology at multiplex theaters to be something of a underwhelming novelty, even at its best. It doesn’t wear well, and the films – excepting, perhaps, parts of “Avatar” – seem muddy and dark.
Not so with the digital Imax technology, at least not under gorgeous blue Tahitian skies. The steeply pitched seats put the 60-by-80-foot screen practically within touch, and the 3-D technology puts gorgeous Tahitian scenery and possibly even more gorgeous Tahitian people less than an arm’s-length away from you.
And when the waves break seemingly on top of your head, it’s hard to understate how remarkable it is.”

THE ULTIMATE WAVE: TAHITI plunges you into the stunning beauty of an island paradise on a quest to find the perfect wave-riding experience. Nine-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater and Tahitian surfer Raimana Van Bastolaer and a group of friends seek out the best waves breaking on the reef at Tahiti’s famed surf site Teahupo’o. As their quest unfolds, you are plunged beneath the surface of things, to explore the hidden forces at work shaping ocean waves and the islands that lie in their path.Amidst surfing action, you navigate the cosmos and an ocean storm in a search for the source and nature of a wave’s energy. Exploring mountainous Tahiti, you are thrust into the turbulent volcanic past of the island and its neighbors and discover the seagoing, wave-riding roots of the islanders themselves — a culture still rich in the music, dance and lore of the sea. Beneath the ocean, swimming with surfers, you explore the stunning, fragile beauty of the reef habitat — a turbulent, wave-shaping interface that envelops the island and nurtures the ocean’s multitudes in motion — fish, dolphins, sharks and whales. When the truly big surf arrives at Teahupo’o, surfing play becomes surfing survival as the riders artfully tackle some of the heaviest surf on the planet!
